This guy wasn't a big snake (its head was about 2.5 inches long), but it took up half the trail! I was about 5-6 feet away when I spotted it, and I took two steps back really fast! Found him on the Lakefront Trail, late June 2019.
It didn't move at all while I stood and took photos.
I assessed the situation and decided that if I took a couple of steps off to my left, I could get up on a flat rock and go around the rattler. But the moment I took a half of a sidestep, he turned and looked at me as if to acknowledge that he certainly saw me! I decided retreat was the best option!
In September 2020, I was coming down the Mystic switchbacks, and I passed a small open burrow right off the side of the trail. I did not notice this rattlesnake until right as I walked by him, and I seriously gasped! A few steps down the trail, I turned and took this photo. He retreated back further into the burrow and I was just fine with that!
